Sunday 20th of July was Lifeline Darling Downs and South West Qld’s 39th Birthday! Over the years Lifeline has grown and expanded from the Call Centre at Matilda House established by Mr Vic Davis, a retired bank manager who was also a founding member of Lifeline Brisbane. The centre that was established received on average 600 – 700 calls per year.
As Lifeline Toowoomba started to grow, so did its services, establishing the Family Support Service in 1979, the Material Aid service (now Emergency Relief), and other future services and programs such as Lifeline Farmline, the Break-even Program, Partners in Recovery and many more to name.
It also started to expand on a geographic basis, with sub-committees in Dalby and Warwick formed in 1982 to help fund the first landline connection to Toowoomba. It has expended now to the far reaches of southern Queensland with establishments located in Toowoomba, Warwick, Dalby, Oakey, Stanthorpe, Mitchell, St George, Cunnamulla, Charleville, Roma, Wandoan, Tara and Chinchilla providing services to over 10,000 people.
Now with an annual turnover of over $10 million dollars, Lifeline Darling Downs and South West Queensland Ltd has 130 Employees and over 400 volunteers across the region. Our mission in the region is to Build Communities and Empower People. Lifeline Darling Downs has had many changes in location over the 39 years of service to the community finally settling the Head Office in Russell Street, Toowoomba and the Distribution Centre in Stephen Street and also many support centres and shops in the region.
